University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) /

Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO)

2024-2025

To promote the quality of university education and the professional development of their teaching staff Dutch research universities agreed, in 2008, to mutually recognize the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). The UTQ programme is designed to support your growth as an educator and encourages you to evaluate and enhance your teaching competences. At central level the following three core competence have been identified as directly related to the core tasks of UM educators:

  • Developing education and assessment;
  • Delivering education; and
  • Professional conduct.

Faculty of Law’s UTQ Programme

To support you in acquiring and developing  the knowledge, insights and competencies needed for teaching at UM, and subsequently obtain the UTQ, the Faculty of Law offers a modular programme. The three core competences are translated into the following 6 modules:

1. Thesis Supervision & Assessment;
2. Vision on Education;
3. Lectures in Problem-Based Learning;
4. Course Development & Problem Design;
5. Assessment;
6. Tutor role.

Most of these modules consist of a theoretical session exploring educational principles and literature (part 1) and a more practical oriented workshop (part 2). These sessions require preparation and are mandatory. The modules can be followed in whatever order suits your needs and schedule best. In addition, the Faculty offers several professionally relevant non-mandatory info and discussion sessions. You are (strongly) encouraged to attend these.

Alongside the modules, you are required to write a portfolio. The UTQ portfolio should provide evidence of your knowledge of educational principles and literature, your ability to effectively apply these insights in your own educational practice and reflections on your own professional development. The UTQ trajectory ends with an assessment of the portfolio and a final interview. Deadline for the submission of the portfolio (to the UTQ coordinator) is either 1st of December or 1st of June  with a view to completing the trajectory the month after. Before submission to the UTQ coordinator your head of department must have approved your portfolio.

Requirements for Participation:

To be able to register for the UTQ programme, participants must meet the following requirements:

  • Your head of department has agreed upon your participation;
  • You have successfully completed the PBL/tutor training; and
  • You have ample teaching experience – that is you have, at least, been a tutor (at UM) for a minimum of two course periods, however, more extensive educational experience is preferred.

Below you will find the planning of the modules and sessions for the upcoming academic year.
