Amy Vervoort (25) was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was 14 months old. She is currently being treated at the Academic Center for Epileptology in the Maastricht UMC+ and epilepsy center Kempenhaeghe in Heeze. During childhood, she sometimes had epileptic seizures several times a day while sometimes the seizures didn’t occur at all for several months. Various anti-epileptic drugs were tried to prevent seizures, but they didn’t work sufficiently. Despite having epileptic seizures, Amy hardly experienced any discomfort due to her epilepsy during childhood. However, in her teens the seizures became worse and their frequency increased. She started to experienced more and more limitations due to her seizures. For example, she wasn’t allowed to get her driver’s license. After secondary school she entered Tilburg University to study Business Economics. Amy lived her life like her peers, but was increasingly confronted with the dangers of epilepsy, especially after 2018, when she suffered a status epilepticus. Because of the increasing limitations and dangers related to her seizures, Amy wanted to find out whether she was eligible for epilepsy surgery. Several investigations were carried out, and revealed that she was a good candidate for surgery. She decided to undergo surgery after obtaining her master’s degree in Accountancy. Amy had surgery one year ago. She has had no more tonic-clonic seizures since.
