A historical analysis of lithium governance in Latin America
My proposal concerns a historical analysis of lithium governance in Latin America. My paper analyzed primary and secondary sources on the policies implemented by Chile and Argentina since the 1990s. In the wake of the recent “anti-extractivist” popular movements, the research assessed to what extent these governments implemented policies with the potential to challenge environmental and social pressures at a local and regional level. It placed the currently relevant topic of resources’ governance, especially the net-zero friendly lithium, within the historical debates on commodity booms, economic development, the resource curse, and inequality in Latin America.
