Abstract
Depression and type 2 diabetes - Is there a common ground?
findings from The Maastricht Study
Depression risk is doubled in persons with type 2 diabetes. This has a large impact on quality of life and societal costs. Moreover, all cause and cardiovascular mortality is increased by 40%. There may be a common ground behind the co-occurrence of these disease, potential mechanisms include psychosocial, lifestyle and biomedical factors. The Maastricht Study is a rich resource for studying this common ground, due to its’ deep phenotyping approach on both diabetes, depression and brain imaging. This presentation, will highlight the research into the relation between diabetes and depression within The Maastricht Study over the past years.
