Day 2 - Icons of Czech Avantgarde: Authenticity & Style Diversity
8:30am CHECK-IN [National Library of Technology]
8:50am Welcome by Moderator architect Petr Klíma and introduction of keynote speaker
8:55am Keynote Address: Professor Burkhardt Rukschcio
Lecture Outline - The Genesis of Loos' Raumplan
Author of the reconstruction of the Looshaus and outstanding expert on the work of Adolf Loos, Professor Burkhardt Rukschcio will present in his keynote address the history of the restoration and reconstruction of this gem of modern architecture. The famous Vienna Looshaus on Michaelerplatz diagonally opposite the Vienna Hofburg was completed in 1910 according to plans by Adolf Loos. Due to its simple, unornamented façade, the local press turned it into a veritable building scandal. Built at the time as a commercial building for Goldman and Salatsch, the building has thus become one of the most controversial and well-known in Vienna. Taken over by the Raiffeisenbank, it was carefully restored in 1989 under the direction of the architect and Loos expert Burkhardt Rukschcio.
About Prof Burkhardt Rukschcio
Burkhardt Rukschcio (1941) studied architecture as well as art history and archaeology in Vienna and wrote his dissertation in 1974 on the subject of 'Studies on Designs, Projects and Executed Buildings by Adolf Loos (1870 - 1933)'. Since the early 1970s, Rukschcio has devoted a large part of his professional activity as a researcher and as a lecturer to the life and work of Adolf Loos and is one of the best-known Loos specialists in Vienna. As curator for the architecture department of the Albertina Graphic Collection in Vienna, he arranged and inventoried the Adolf Loos Archive. In 1982, together with Roland Schachel, he published the standard work 'Adolf Loos. Life and Work' published by Residenz Verlag. He was responsible for several restorations of Loos works: the Looshaus on Michaelerplatz (1987), the American Bar/Loos Bar (1989), the music collection of the Vienna Library in the City Hall (1989) and the Strasser House in Kupelwiesergasse.
