Dr. Roel Haeren, M.D., Ph.D. vascular neurosurgeon at the Maastricht University Medical Center (UMC), Maastricht, the Netherlands.
Roel Haeren studied Medicine at the Maastricht University (2005-2012). He did his training in neurosurgery at the Maastricht UMC+, Maastricht and Zuyderland MC, Heerlen(2013-2019). Alongside his residency training, Roel did a Ph.D.-project on the vascular abnormalities in chronic epilepsy patients. His thesis (2018) called ‘Vascular Ventures: Analysis of vascular structures and function in epilepsy’ was awarded the Verbiestprijs for best neurosurgical Ph.D.-thesis in 2019.
In 2020, Roel was awarded the C. Ehrnrooth skull base and vascular neurosurgery fellowship at the Helsinki University Hospital (Finland) where he became proficient in vascular neurosurgery. Thereafter, he was appointed as a consultant neurosurgeon with particular expertise in vascular neurosurgery as well as spine surgery. As the principal investigator in vascular neurosurgery, the focus of his research is on the treatment of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhages. Here, he particularly explores the relationship between abnormalities within the microcirculation and the secondary consequences of a subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Prof. Caroline van Heugten, Professor of Neuropsychology and head of the Limburg Brain Injury center, at the department of Neuropsychology and Psychopharmacology, faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience.
Her research focusses on the neuropsychological consequences of acquired brain injury.
