Simulating the energy transition in the horticulture sector - supporting decision-making under deep uncertainty: by Dr. ir. Émile Chappin (Associate Professor of Energy Systems & Simulation at the Faculty of Technology Policy and Management at TU Delft)
The energy transition is taking shape. We see a rapid expansion of renewables; changes are needed in all sectors. For the agriculture sector, decisions related to the adoption and use of energy technologies embed many of the sector's innovations but also face deep uncertainties. Such decisions are influenced by the means and interests of various stakeholders, many energy policies, and the context of regional, European, and global developments. Simulation models help to capture such complexities and explore what no-regret options are, what policies work under what conditions, and what may be expected. Professor Chappin discusses some of the challenges and opportunities that originate from the uncertainties in these complex systems and the role of simulation in supporting decision-making.
AgriPV market trend, open vs closed solutions: by Prof. Dr. ir. Olindo Isabella (Head of the Photovoltaic Materials and Devices group at TU Delft)
Professor Isabella shares the challenges and opportunities of optimising PV systems for different agricultural practices in both energy-efficient greenhouses and future orchards. The energy sector needs to be decarbonised, and photovoltaics (PV) is a key technology for this transition. While rooftop PV systems are becoming popular, it is challenging to realise at local level nationwide PV targets, for which the speed and scale of this transition cannot be met only with small-scale PV systems. The concept of agrivoltaics, which combines agriculture and PV generation on the same land, is appealing for implementing innovative and cost-effective technical solutions. These can provide green electricity and adapt to different crops and climates, thus maintaining the agricultural aesthetics of the environment
