LECTURE
The Freedom to Stay
MON 24 MARCH, 20:00
Auditorium, Minderbroedersberg 4-6
Eva von Redecker
Philosopher
Most people see freedom as the freedom to travel, to move around without restriction and to meet people wherever one wishes. But how sustainable is such a spatially defined concept of freedom? After all, we are facing times in which places to live are dwindling and the climate crisis or wars could make entire regions uninhabitable.
Philosopher Eva von Redecker proposes a radical new way to look at freedom: what if we conceive freedom as a place where we can stay? Rather than focusing on space, Von Redecker focuses on time. That may sound like a paradox, but in this lecture she will explain why this new interpretation is better for people and nature, but also for the community, because it reduces the distance between individuals. Lasting freedom can only be achieved collectively. And it grows when we share it.
Eva von Redecker is a German critical theorist and feminist philosopher, writing about social change, moral judgment and modern property. Her recent book Bleibefreiheit is translated into Dutch as De vrijheid om te blijven.
