Femicide
MON 6 MAY, 20:00
Auditorium, Minderbroedersberg 4-6
Prof. Janine Janssen
Professor of Violence in Dependency Relationships, and Head of research at the Dutch National Expertise Centre for Honour-related Violence
Every 8 days on average, a woman is murdered in the Netherlands because she is a woman. This puts the Netherlands top of the list in Europe. This type of murder, also known as femicide, is rarely committed on impulse. In many cases, the perpetrator is a partner or ex-partner.
There is an increasing focus on femicide and its consequences. In this lecture, expert Janine Janssen deals with the following questions in depth. What exactly is femicide? What is the usual pattern that leads to murder and who are the perpetrators? Can femicide be prevented? And: how is it different from gender-related violence in general, and why is it important to keep paying attention to this type of violence as well?
