Travel to The Hague & transport in The Hague:

Arrival from Schiphol Airport:

The distance from Schiphol Airport to The Hague is 42 km (26 miles). Schiphol Airport has a train station in the terminal with train connections to The Hague. Taxi services are available at the airport.

 

Arrival from Rotterdam The Hague Airport:

The distance from Rotterdam The Hague Airport to The Hague is 15 km (9 miles). Rotterdam The Hague Airport has a bus service to Rotterdam Central station. There are train connections between Rotterdam Central station and The Hague station. Taxi services are available at the airport.

 

Train tickets can be purchased from the NS ticket machine, the NS service counter or via the NS website.

 

From Den Haag Central train station to the Peace Palace: 

The following buses depart from the train station and stops at the Peace Palace. Bus stop: “Vredespaleis”:  

  • Bus 28, in the direction of DH Zuiderstrand.

  • Bus 24, in the direction of DH Kijkduin.

 

Connections from the city center to the Peace Palace:

The following buses/trams depart from the city center, bus/tram stop “Centrum” and stops at the Peace Palace. Bus stop: “Vredespaleis”:  

  • Bus 28, in the direction of DH Zuiderstrand.

  • Bus 24, in the direction of DH Kijkduin.

  • Tram 1, in the direction of Scheveningen Noord.

 

Public transport:

The main ways of transportation in The Hague are via bus and tram provided by the public transport company HTM. In general, service is offered from 06.00 hours in the morning until 01.30 at night. For travel planning, scheduled arrival and departure times and any active disruptions check HTM timetable or the 9292 website. Payment can be done by checking in with your debit card or credit card. Remember to check out before departing the vehicle.

Taxis:

Taxis (recognizable by their blue license plates) are available at airports, train stations, designated taxi stands and with the assistance of your hotel. It is not common to hail a taxi from the street and it is highly recommended to avoid riding with unlicensed cab drivers offering their services in the airport or train terminals.

 

Both Uber and Bolt offer rideshare services in the Netherlands via their mobile apps.

Access to the Peace Palace Premises & registration procedure

 

Upon arrival, guests will be required to present a valid passport or identity card to the security officers to gain access to the Peace Palace premises. Please ensure that these documents bear the same name as the one under which you are registered for the Congress.

 

Guests arriving by foot are invited to enter the premises through the Security Lodge, located at the left side of the main gate.

 

Guests arriving by car are invited to please proceed to the right gate. Please note that there is no parking space available at the Peace Palace premises.

 

Guests are invited to proceed to the Academy Building, located on the left side of the Peace Palace.

 

The registration desk can be found inside, to the right, upon entering the Academy Building. There, you will receive a visitor badge. Guests are requested to wear the badge at all times and keep it visible throughout the whole Congress. Any questions can be asked at the information desk, located in the foyer of the Academy Building. Both the registration and information desks will be clearly identified with signs at the Congress.

The Venue, facilities and services

The Auditorium, Academy Building:

 

The Congress sessions will mainly take place in the Auditorium in the Academy Building. In the lower level of the building, guests will find a garderobe, lockers, and toilets.

A wifi connection will be made available to all guests to the Congress. Connection details will be provided in the Academy Building.

Interpretation services in Arabic, French and Spanish will be provided during the main sessions of the Congress and during the discussions of the Members of the Court.

 

All buildings in the Netherlands and on the Peace Palace premises are non-smoking buildings. Outside smoking areas will be designated.

The Hague & Scheveningen

 

The Hague is the third largest city in the Netherlands, it is the country’s administrative center and its seat of government. As such The Hague is also referred to as the Government Capital of the Netherlands, contrary to the official capital Amsterdam.

 

Scheveningen is one of The Hague’s eight districts and one of the more popular seaside resorts in the Netherlands. It has a long sandy beach with a busy esplanade, pier, harbor and lighthouse. The area around the De Pier is rather busy and considered a tourist hotspot. Further south the beaches become quieter with the Zuiderstrand being the preferred beach for many locals.

The Netherlands

 

Health and Safety

In general, the Netherlands is considered a very safe country to visit. However, common sense is recommended when traveling through more densely populated areas, especially in the evening/at night. Avoid carrying large amounts and/or flaunting your belongings.

 

Tap water is safe to drink in the Netherlands.

 

Climate

The Netherlands has a moderate maritime climate. The average temperature in June is around 15°C to 21°C. Rain is always a possibility.

 

Currency and banking

The Euro is the currency used in the Netherlands. It comprises six coins (€0.05, €0.10, €0.20, €0.50, €1 and €2) and seven notes (€5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200 and €500). Notes of €100, €200 and €500 are not generally accepted in shops or restaurants. The preferred way of payment by card, not all shops or restaurants accept cash payments. Contactless transactions using Apple Pay or Google Wallet are accepted in most locations.

 

ATM’s

The most frequent ATM is the “Geldmaat ATM”, recognisable by its bright yellow colour. Anyone with a debit card (Maestro/Mastercard) or credit card (Mastercard/Visa) can withdraw bills from the Geldmaat ATM.

 

Tipping is common when the service and/or food was considered good, usually around between 5 and 10 percent.

 

Electricity

The power supply is 220 volts, 50 Hz (plug: two round prongs).

Standard Time Zone: GMT +1.

 

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited in all public buildings, bars and restaurants.

The country code for the Netherlands is +31 and the area code for The Hague is (0)70. For outbound international phone calls from the Netherlands, first dial ‘00’, followed by the relevant country code.
