Benoît Hilloulin is currently Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Centrale Nantes (Nantes University) in France. He obtained his joint Ph.D. at Centrale Nantes and Ghent University (Belgium) in 2015, working with Prof. Ahmed Loukili, Prof. Nele De Belie, and Dr. Odile Abraham. During his thesis on the self-healing of concrete, he proposed several types of models to describe the coupled phenomenon (FEM, reactive transport, and hydration-based model). He accepted a postdoctoral position at Centrale Nantes in collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA) to develop unsupervised AI-based techniques to analyse indentation data of irradiated concrete and infer its micromechanical properties, including creep. Since then, he has been exploring the potential of AI-based techniques such as interpretable ensemble models, computer vision, and reinforcement learning to promote the development of low-carbon concrete and innovative applications.
