Marcel Aries is born in 1979. He studied medicine in Nijmegen. He completed his internship of neurology and intensive care in University Medical Center Groningen and University of Cambridge (UK). His PhD thesis was on improvement of cerebral perfusion in acute stroke and severe traumatic brain injury patients. In 2016 he started as an intensive care consultant in Maastricht University Medical Center with special interest in severe acute brain injury. His research objectives are focused on improving cerebral monitoring and imaging and development of new treatment to reduce (secondary) cerebral damage after acute brain injury. In 2017 he started the ‘BrainBattle Foundation’ (HersenStrijd fonds) which is supported by University Fund Limburg (SWOL). 
 
Caroline van Heugten is a professor of Clinical Neuropsychology at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. The focus of her research is on neuropsychological interventions for persons with acquired brain injury such as stroke, traumatic brain injury and anoxic brain damage. Her research focusses along the following three research lines: developing and evaluating instruments for measuring the outcome of neuropsychological interventions, clinical and cost-effectiveness of neuropsychological interventions and investigating factors influencing the outcome of neuropsychological interventions. She has published over 250 international peer-reviewed papers and successfully supervised more than 25 PhD students. Currently she is the director of the Limburg Brain Injury Center aimed at increasing the quality of life for patients with brain injury and their carers by gathering, sharing and implementing knowledge. She is one of the editors of the 2017 first international handbook on neuropsychological rehabilitation (Routledge, UK). Caroline van Heugten is known both nationally and internationally for her applied approach connecting research and clinical practice in the field of acquired brain injury.
